Have a 57 sedan with a 283 and a powerglide transmission. Shifts hard between low and high. Now I lost reverse. Made low band adjustment to help the shifting but not solve it. I was told the reverse band is prone to breakage on the PG. Should I get it rebuilt or look for a different transmission like a 700R4.

350 or 700r4 would be my suggestion depending how much money you want to spend.

Thanks for your response. I guess I need to compare costs. Does anyone know who repairs or upgrades transmissions in the Milwaukee area so I can get some pricing information to compare my options.

Found a shop that works on older transmissions. Had the transmission rebuilt. It shifts smooth and I got reverse back. Very pleased with the results.
