I'm trying to find out if there's a conversion kit/method to swap out a PG trans to something more modern in my '58 Brookwood with the 283. I want to keep it column shifted.

A 350TH would be the easiest and most economical method. There's several other options such a 2004R, 700R4, tremec 5 speed, and others at a much great price tag.

There are several ways you can go. Do you know what rear end gear your running? Are you happy with your highway cruise speed? (engine rpm). If your happy with that then the TH350 is almost a drop in. If you want lower engine speed at highway cruising then the 700R4/2004R options are a little more hassle but very worth the effort. The 700R4 pairs up very nicely with a 3:73 rear gear. Several sources for crossmember and depending on which tailshaft length T350 you may not need to modify the driveshaft. Lots of options. All of them can be made to work with the column shifter.

Hi Guys, I have a V8 305 th350 combo and its great but if I was starting from scratch I would want the overdrive series of 700R etc.
Better open road cruising revs and economy.

But be very aware with some of the later transmissions, post th350, if you mess up the TV settings they will burn up inside. The angle and settings of that cable are critical.

If its an infrequent use around town sort of vehicle then the bulletproof th350 will be fine.

Thanks Ragtp66. While replacing the transmission is no big deal, having a good working steering column with the proper gear indicator is my biggest challenge. This wagon will be my wife's cruiser so she will need to know exactly where Park, Neutral and Drive are I'm hoping there's some kit out there that makes this issue possible.
