My 84 ran just fine until one day it backfired through the intake. I let it go and it did it again the next day and then began to run very, very rough. It will start and idle just fine but under any load it breaks down and backfires. Shop has gone through all of the obvious ignition and fuel problems and can't find a solution. I want to ask them to remove the catalytic convertor...it feels like the engine is "choking". But there haven't been any symptoms to point to the CAT, like the smell, etc. Please help!

Is this a tuned port or Vortec engine?

ITS A CROSSFIRE,2 TBI'S SITTING SIDEWAYS.
A BLOCKED CAT USUALLY ACTS LIKE A JAKE BRAKE SINCE THE EXHAUST HAS NOW WHERE TO GO & JUST BACKS UP.IF ITS LIKE A 85 OR LATER THE CAT IS BOLTED ON,SO ITS NOT THAT HARD TO REMOVE.
IT COULD BE JUST A BAD CAP WITH CARBON TRACTS,BAD WIRE,LOT OF RESISTANCE & ITS JUMPING INSIDE THE CAP.

I guess it is a Vortec. It has cross-fire injection. It is not a TPI

I just had a 84 crossfire in the shop that ran awful, Turned out to be the rubber hose on the fuel pump "in the tank" was deteriorated.
