What are you guys with mini tubs and relocated springs running on 17 inch rims in the rear?

I'm looking at possibly 285/40r17. My brain is hurting from trying to read everything and tire size calculators and searching for pictures.

I'd love to see and hear some real world experiences and pictures.

Thanks!
John

The mini tubs in my car are from Earls out of California.
The center of the axle to the inside of the tub to the top is about 25".
This is with the top of the tub about 1" below the trunk hinge.
If i'm not mistaken the tub front to back is 36".
An the width in my case is about 15 ΒΌ " wheel opening inner lip to frame.
I am running 28x12x15 MT's. 28x13x15 would fit with about 1" on both sides.
15x10, 5 bs rims.
let us know what you decided on.

The Earle Williams tubs are what I call "race tubs". They will accommodate a much taller tire than the stock tub which is in the neighborhood of 32-33" (I don't have an exact measurement).

If you run more than 29.5"-30" tire you need the bigger tubs. You also must make sure that the tire won't hit the corner of the wheel cutout where the cutout meets the rocker panel.

The 285/40-17 tire you mention is only 26" tall so no problem with either the tub diameter or wheel cutout. You will have to move the springs and do a mini tub to move the inner tub wall over to the frame.

So to make the 285/40-17 fit, all you need to do is match up the axle width and wheel backspacing so that the wheel/tire is centered in the space available. The online calculator will do this for you.

When I ran 17's I ran a 7.75" BS 11" wheel but the limitations on wide rubber and low Aspect ratio bugged me being limited to a 315/35/17 that was only some 26" in diameter so I stepped up to an 18"x11"-8"BS wheel and now am running a 28" tall 305-45-18 Nitto NT555DR. The 17's also would do nothing but spin even though I was running the super soft Goodyear F1s. Now please note with the normally aspirated motor this was not an issue but once I stepped up to the Supercharged motor the low end torque made the car virtually undriveable.
My minitubs are simple widened stocks set back to the frame. I can go to an even taller 30" tire by setting the axle back an inch (longer driveshaft and other domino effects...LOL!).
