Been enjoying my 327/250/Glide lately after rebuilding the original 4GC. I now need to address some bad behaviour from the Powerglide. When at light throttle cruise, or, on deceleration, it will shift from high to low. When at cruise, applying more throttle will result in good acceleration, and a shift to high. When coasting down, it will shift from high to low a few times before coming to a stop.

I'm open to suggestions.

Sounds like the kickdown cable needs adjusting.

The throttle valve linkage needs to be adjusted. Check out the Reference Materials section, the 65 Chassis Service Manual. Page 7-22 gives the instructions, and pay close attention to the related picture. Having an improperly adjusted TV can smoke a transmission in a few miles. Set it EXACTLY as described and you'll have no problems.

Thanks, I appreciate the detailed info. I have the original service manuals here, I'm looking at that page right now. Should I do a low band adjustment while I'm at it?

It's been 18 years since my trans was rebuilt and I've never had to adjust the low band. Granted it gets a few hundred miles a year, but still. I wouldn't bother.
The TV is a critical adjustment on the aluminum 'glide. Once set, though, it stays set and you don't have to worry about it again.

Let's file this one under the KISS principle. It was low on fluid. I checked when I first got it going after rebuilding the carb last month, it had only driven a couple times in the last two years. With the engine cold, fluid was just above the full line. After being so ecstatic about the carb returning the car to running well, I totally forgot to check the fluid hot. Did that yesterday. After a 20 mile drive, nothing showing on the stick. Filled it slowly to the line, and happy to report that the car is driving normally. Shifts on time, no downshifting on coasting.

I will still double check the TV. I will also do the band when I do a filter/fluid change later this fall.
