I went to the dealer and with the vin no. they found out nothing but the gear ratio is 3.15. All it says is it is a 5.7L, V-8 aluminum block and heads. Does any one know for sure. The dealer suggested I take it and do a dyno on it.

Thank you sir, funny though I had a 69, 350/350 4 speed, 4.11, carbureted and this one just feels like more balls. I am sure it is the fuel injection and all the new tech.

The method of rating HP changed in 1972. You can see this for yourself by comparing 71 and 72 specs for the same engines. The 72 numbers are much lower. In the practical sense, this means that 72-up horses are "stronger" than 71-earlier.

In 1972 they went to "net" horsepower ratings. The engines were rated with the accessories installed and with the additional drag they imposed on the engines. Hated the way it looked at the time, but understood why. Also, Corvette engine information plaques that appeared on the console did not come with horsepower listed as in previous years. Just omitted it because they seemed less appealing.

Question,,, I have a 1997 LS1 and trying to find out how much horse power this motor has is like pulling teeth. I went to the dealer and with the vin no. they found out nothing but the gear ratio is 3.15. All it says is it is a 5.7L, V-8 aluminum block and heads. Does any one know for sure. The dealer suggested I take it and do a dyno on it.
Your LS1 has 345 horse power, and 350 ft pound torque, stock, just as my 1999 Corvette.
In 2001 power got bumped up from the upgrade to the LS6 intake (GM put these intake's on all LS1 and LS6 engines until their end of production for 2004 model years)
I believe 350 HP and 375 ft pound torque on manual transmission C5 Corvette, but less torque on the automatic, dialed it back in the tune to protect the transmission, as that was pushing it past it's limit.
My LS1 is factory stock and main reason I have not added modifications is it's really expensive!
However if I had the extra $$, my plan would be to put on A and A Corvette supercharger kit, cam and valve train to compliment the supercharger kit, long tube headers, and maybe a LS6 intake.
With just the supercharger kit alone, a C5 Corvette LS1 will put out over 500 rear wheel horsepower, probably 550 to 600 horsepower at the engine.
It will drive like stock until you romp it and get up to about 3000 rpm, then it will come alive make major power until you let off the gas.
It won't make the car eat any more gas just cruising around, fits under the factory hood.
I would add the cam and headers and LS6 intake, at the same time, because getting the car tuned ain't cheap, so do it all at once.
Last I looked their supercharger kits are at least 5000 bucks, but it's a great design, and I think it's worth it.
Would need your automatic built up to handle that power, on my car I would need a really strong clutch kit to hold the power.
Back to your car, having 3.15 rear gears is the performance version on the automatic, that was a more expensive option, and gives you better acceleration.
Most automatic came with 2.73 rear gears, which reduces acceleration.
The manual transmission C5 came with 3.42 rear gears.
I've read if you buy a 3.42 differential and add it to automatic C5, along with a 3000 stall torque converter, even on a stock LS1 it will be a BEAST!
It would outrun a 6 speed Corvette from a stop up to about 100 mph.
Edit, outrun a stock LS1 6 speed C5, but not a Z06 C5 Corvette with the 405 horsepower LS6 engine, or a C5 with engine modifications.
The catch is it would get less mpg.
3.15 is a good factory option.
