Turns out my car problems were due to a cracked flexplate which I discovered when it completely sheared in two and the engine stopped turning. My questions is, if I'm replacing the flexplate, should I also replace the TC? If so, what is a good replacement torque converter for a stock setup aluminum powerglide

Normally, the converter should be replaced if you have had an internal trans failure, because then debris can enter the converter which might be difficult or impossible to remove by flushing. Flexplate failure does not usually damage the converter, but if you would feel better replacing it, then by all means do so.

Those who choose an automatic transmission want transportation. Those who choose a manual transmission want to drive.

Do you have a recommendation for a mild upgrade or good quality on a stock setup tc?

Unless the mounting area of the torque converter is damaged, I'd replace the flexplate and move on.
