I was chatting with a gentleman on Facebook who owns a 1951 BelAir. This is where he decided to mount the fog lights on his car...opinions?

Just doesn't look right.
Here are the ones on my 46 I added, except they will be turn signals when I get the system installed.

I agree. It's not a good location if the car has turn signals.

But these installation instructions don't tell you what to do if the car already has the accessory grille guard. Seems to me the two accessories aren't compatible.

There is a lot to unpack concerning the conversation I had with the owner of the '51. It all really began when someone asked about placement of fog lights on a 1953.

1] He told the person to purchase a 1953 Accessory Installation Manual and all of his questions would be answered.

2] I informed him and the owner of the 1953 that there were no instructions there, dimensions or otherwise, as there was not a "Chevrolet Authorized" fog light option offered in 1953.

3] He insisted that there was.

4] He them displayed photos of his 1951 and 1949 with fog lights and said to use the 1952 Installation manual as the two installations would be very close, if not, the same.

5] I informed him that any measurements that would be found in any 49-52 manuals were incumbent upon using the type and style of brackets included in the kits for installing that particular option.

6] He basically said that dealerships [depending on region in the U.S] used whatever they had sitting around a the time and that a dealership would have installed 1952 fog lights on a 1953.

7] I basically threw up my hands in frustration and declared him the "Chevrolet Expert".

I do believe if you look at the diagram below.... and had the "Chevrolet Expert" used the 5" Guide 2025A fog light [the light included in the 1951 kit] as opposed to "what the dealer had sitting around"...they look like 7" lamps - there would probably have been plenty of room for both as the height of the lamp can be adjusted as well.

Those lights on the yellow car look like they need to be swapped side to side.

EXACTLY as shown in the 1950 ['49 measurements are the same] Accessory Installation Manual. Thanks for posting...kool photo! You are right about swapping. According to the "Chevrolet Expert", I guess the dealerships back in the day also allowed the service techs to mount them anyway thought was right regardless of the instructions.

What a mess. It has a 1949 accessory grille guard, a 1949 license plate guard. For 1951 and 1952 the fogs go next to the bumper upright guards so as not to hide parking lights.
The dealership would have mounted Guide GM brand lights according to the instructions that came with the kit.
Chevrolet did not offer fog lights in 1953, probably due to the space between the grille and bumper being too narrow.

Thanks Gene [the "real" Chevrolet expert]. I think the owner was simply trying to justify "his" installation. The problem I had was that he was disseminating false information to another enthusiast who had legitimate questions about his '53.

On a '53 ABSOLUTELY! When he asked where should I put them on my '53, one person answered, "the front". My reply was that it was not as funny an answer as one would think as Chevrolet had zero guidance on the topic. And I think one of my replies was very similar to yours Tom....with one caveat...other than in front of the park / turn lights!

Do you drive in the fog a lot? Im sure the manufacture has recommendations for the correct height to maximize the ability to give better vision in the fog.

Whom are you asking? This entire thread was started because someone [at another web site] suggested that a 1953 Chevrolet owner buy a 1953 Accessory Installation Manual to get the correct placement for his fog lights. Only problem is that fog lights were not offered as an option in 1953. Hence, the installation manual has zero information on placement. The first photo shows the car of the person giving the advice. It is a 1951 Chevrolet and obviously because of the placement on the fog lights on that car, it is clear that the person giving the advice did not follow his own advice, OR the instructions provided in the Accessory Installation Manual for 1951. I pointed out the installation instructions in the 1950 and 1951 accessory manuals. He justified his two installations [the green '51 and the yellow '49] by saying that dealerships put on whatever they had left over from previous years.

Are both the green and yellow cars owned by the same person? If so, is it possible the ones on the green car were mounted by using the yellow car as a guide instead of actual instructions? The placement appears similar

Yes they are. They are both owned by the person who assured the '53 owner that if he were to buy a 1953 Accessory Installation Manual, the mounting instructions for fog lights on his '53 would be found there. Below is a scan of the table of contents of the 1953 manual. Notice that FOG LIGHTS are NOT listed for the passenger car. When I informed him fog that lights were not offered from Chevrolet as an option for passenger cars in 1953, he insisted that they were.
