I went a head and used the TKO600 5 speed. Just waiting for my driveshaft to get here now!

the trans is only temporarily in the car and I think it is only going to require a little bit of cutting to get the shifter up through the floor!

Has anyone on here done this swap? If so, how much cutting did you need to do?

Hi, I have a TKO500 in My 66 Impala. Bought as a Kit and it included a sheet metal floor pan section to accomodate the new trans. It is not only the shifter but the size of the trans also. A bit wider and taller. Check my video on Youtube https://youtu.be/mCeACZ52lek. You can pause toward the end at the interior section Titled 'Hard Work Done' and you will see what I did. A little extreme but the pan They sent will cover it.

Good luck and success with the Swap! I installed a Legends LTG 700 into my 66 Biscayne and that overdrive 5th gear makes highway driving enjoyable, even though I only have 3:73 gears.
Trouble with Legends is availability of the unit which is spotty to say the least. At this point I do not think you can realistically get one except from some one who already has possession.

Emil,
I was thinking about a Legend for a car after reading about them over the past year. Can you elaborate on the issue? Is it simply because demand is so high or production issues?

I had an issue in trying to buy a Holley FT system where it sounded like demand was out pacing supply.

Just curious if you heard any more detail.

Scott

I would be looking for a Legend if it installs more easily than the TKO (less floor tunnel butchering). Does anyone here have any comments about this?

Those who choose an automatic transmission want transportation. Those who choose a manual transmission want to drive.

Ray,
There was a long thread on the Chevelle site ( I think Team Chevelle) where they went through several advantages beyond the size. I don't know if I ever read that the Legend will go in any application where the Muncie was but I got that impression. When I was looking for the link I mentioned I found a different one which shows side-by-side photos of the Legend and the TKO. I understand Tremec makes more than one trans but anyway it's a reference to something else which I think people have reference to.

Check these guys out. I have one of their TKO 500 Perfect Fit in my 66 Impala. My car was a factory 4-speed car and required no cutting. The shifter location worked fine with the console also.

was this with a "streamlined" trans? The trans is in my car just so they could get me a driveshaft measurement. As of now it looks like the only cutting will be around the shifter hole! the rest of the trans clears. If anything is redquired i think just massaging the floor with a hammer will do the trick!

No it was the standard TKO500. They did say you could probbly massage it out with a dead blow hammer but I wanted the room.

Have Fun

The Legend 700 fit under or in the stock transmission tunnel without modification that the Tremec would have required in my 66 Biscayne. The issue with the manufacturer is rumored that the market for the Legends just isn't there to the extent that would support a more robust production. A bit expensive, going for near 4000 dollars. An unfortunate situation because the trans, based only on my experience is strong and shifts well.
You will have to relocate the transmission crossmember approx. 2 inches rearward and of course, shorten the drive shaft. Also, the yoke is 31 spline like for a Ford trans not a 32 count like for the later Muncie/Borg Warner T-10s.

None. My car was a factory 4-speed so it already had the hump and the cutout for the shifter.

My car isn't factory four speed, however it did have a 4 speed in it when i acquired it. Last I saw the trans(tko600) was sitting in the car and appeared to need a little trimming where the shifter went through. I am hoping I do not lose the carpet!
