I am starting to wonder if power brakes where offered as an option on the HiPo 409 versions. the reason I ask is there is no way to remove the drivers side valve cover with the power brake unit installed.

Dave,
Power brakes were indeed an option with 409s. I've had luck by turning over the engine so #7 exhaust valve is open.
Other than that, you'll have to loosen the nuts behind the booster and tilt it toward the fender a tad.
I have P/B on my '62 409 and have removed the valve cover many times.
