Hi everyone: Hoping someone might have some insight into an electrical gremlin just found in my 63 impala 2-spd auto’s backup lights. I had originally thought that I had a grounding issue preventing the backup lights from illuminating when shifter was put in reverse but the bulbs and wiring are fine; The back up lights GO ON when the transmission is in neutral but they then turn off when in reverse position, so I’m guessing that a relay of some type is faulty.

Could anyone offer some guidance where this relay is located- whether it’s in the steering column by the shifter or down near the transmission case itself? I may be naïve in assuming that these backup lights work on an open circuit like a horn relay does and when the car is put in reverse the circuit is complete and the lights pop on. Regardless, this is a new gremlin for me to attempt to fix and any insight is most welcome and appreciated - thanks very much!

Hello there, my guess would be the neutral safety switch is mis-adjusted or has slipped. Is this a console or column shift car?

It’s a column shift 2-spd powerglide. I didn’t even think of that possibility. So that switch is up in column correct? I’d have to sort out how to get in there to check/replace; have not diassembled the column before. Would idea be that by adjusting properly it would bypass the N engage in R, vs. being tripped in N presently? Sorry for geek Q’s!

You might find if the lights come on in neutral that it would/might start in drive. Be carefull.

First, check your shift linkage bushings at the lower end of the steering column, close to the firewall. These bushings do wear out. That can be the cause of your problem. If they are intact, then check the adjustment of the neutral safety switch. It is on top of the steering column, under the dash, near the brake light switch area.

Excellent thread of advice and much appreciated. I have a few things to check out thanks to you all, and I’ll get under there soon to start inspecting things to hopefully work it out.
