Alternator is on my 36 Dodge street rod. Car has been in rebuild mode nine years, maybe 2 hours running time in past three years.
Wire from alternator post to starter post was pinched, bare spot on wire shorted and melted a portion of wire insolation. I'm not able to get a voltage reading from alternator post with no wire connected and engine running. The red rubber isolator on post appears ok but I haven't tried taking it off to check. Alternator has continuity from post to case. I'll be at Pomona Swap this weekend and will buy a new alternator but would like opinions on old one, hopefully it can be repaired.
Always appreciate your help. Thank you.

The shorted output wire probably blew a diode in the alternator. It can be repaired, but may cost as much as a new or rebuilt one. Take it to an auto electric shop. The diodes are inexpensive, the labor is high.

Is it possible for it to put out 40 volts. When I checked two other alternator both were in 14 range. I couldn't get a volt reading but when changing meter setting I know I saw a 40. It was after that I checked continuity, post to case.
This alternator has been in the car for at least a dozen years, never a problem.

Thanks Don, I'll get a new one at Pomona and turn this one over to my BIL for repair.
I appreciate your help Don.
