I have 2 sets of Vette factory alum. valve covers, staggered pattern. the hold down boss on one set is about 3/8 inch high the other set, the boss is most of 1 inch high.
why are these different? because of different HP, a Corvette change, a year change?
am I correct in remembering that Corvette used these starting in 1957?
thanks Rod in AZ

Offset valve cover bolt pattern was used on 265 engines and 283 engines through mid 1959. Not sure why they changed.

Staggered hole Corvette valve covers came in 3 configurations. First was the 9 fin low script starting in 1956 and going through most of 1957. Later in 1957 when the Fuel Injection was introduced they had to grind out a relief in the top fin on the drivers side to clear the air meter on the FI unit. To remedy this problem they changed the mold doing away with the outer top and bottom fin producing the 7 fin valve cover used late 1957 through mid 1959. The 7 fins stayed the same through 1967 although the bolt pattern and script height changed. Later in '58 they changed the mold again and made a taller "Corvette" script. That's why you will hear guys refering to tall script and low script stagger hole valve covers. I don't have a low script here to tell if it had shorter screw bosses but my original '59 covers and a set of NOS tall script I have both have tall bosses. Could be that the low script had short bosses. Can you post a picture of them?

BTW. I have a set of original 1961 covers on my 270 engine that are straight bolt pattern and have short bosses. I think they changed the bolts to straight across due to port configuration changes.

The height of the bosses for the hold down bolts changed from tall to short when the change was made from the staggered to the straight across bolt pattern.
