It's time to replace the battery in my RV. I would like to add a second battery to the system. I watched a couple U Tubes, one showing positive to one battery and negative to second battery. Second UT has pos. and neg. on same battery with jumpers to pos. and neg. on second battery. Are both of these correct hook ups.
Thanks for your help.

2- 6 volt golf cart batteries wired in series will give you 12 volts and the amp hours of 1 battery.

2- 12 volt deep cycle batteries wired in parallel will give you 12 volts and 2x the rated amp hours of 1 battery.

You have to be careful about what you see online. As Dave said, it depends on the battery voltage.

With 12V units, plan for parallel (plus to plus) all the time. The moment you try to series connect (plus to minus) you will fry everything in the RV.

Have you considered using a switch or relay to disconnect the second battery when it isn't being charged? This way you can run the cabin electricals off the second battery without discharging the engine cranking battery. If the cabin battery runs down you can start the engine and charge it up again.

You might also want to look at this thread which mentions a battery isolator to be used for the same purpose.

Yes, I will be using a switch to shut batteries off when not needed. This is on a 2017 Jayco 5th wheel with one battery. It has an isolation switch for that battery but when off it also shuts off the power from plug in. I don't like battery not being able to isolate when plugged in but dealer say it is ok, will not hurt battery but it will not charge now and not even two years old. I store trailer at my house and it is always plugged in.
I will install isolater switch when I replace the batteries.
I'll have to put this on hold until next week, having a alternator problem on my old Dodge.
Always appreciate any and all help Ray, thank you.
