I recently added new short headers and a cold air intake to my 1995 c1500 5.7L. I drove 350 miles without any issues on the interstate. When I reached town and stopped at lights and such, the engine was barely accelerating and I began to get backfires. What do you think is the culprit?

Backfires out of the exhaust or intake?

It comes from under the hood. I'm pretty sure it's from the intake area.

Make sure you didn't cross a plug wire when you put the headers on. Check for vacuum leaks.

Make sure you put on the O2 sensor but to me it sounds like crossed plug wires.

Also double check that the distributor hold down clamp is tight.

I don't recall an o2 sensor attached to the original exhaust manifold at all. I have 2 O2 sensors 1 before and after the cat. I was thinking it was a clogged fuel filter or a bad egr valve. I plan to check the vacuum lines this monday when I get home from work also.

Thank you everyone for not answering with your opinion. Was hoping to utilize all of you to minimize the time to find the culprit. I am now 350 miles from home and all parts stores close in an hour.

What? You are bitching about people not giving you answers? There were several good ones. I did not see ANY feedback from you. What more do you want when you get several likely possibilities and you don't test or look into a single one?

Here's a hint...it's not crossed plug wires censored.

I'll never understand why people get angry when they don't get responses, or the responses they expect, on a free-to-use message board consisting of nothing more than what are essentially unpaid staff - a bunch of other vehicle enthusiasts that do a great job of helping others out, when they can.

Amdms8 you may be frustrated at your current situation but you should also take a moment to re-align your perspective and expectations and realize anybody here that helps is doing so out of kindness, not any obligation.

This is probably the single most helpful auto-related site I have ever been on, and I'm on several, but getting help is always a two way street. Provide clear info, be open to suggestions and more questions, be considerate of those that are trying to help diagnose your issue from a distance without benefit of being in person with hands on the vehicle. Good luck with your situation.

Well said, Richard.

I had an opinion, but I think that I'll just keep it to myself now. I get chewed on enough at work. I don't need to get it when I am off, and doing something that I enjoy.

I'm just saying.
