I have an intermittent electrical problem with my '69 El Camino SS 396. Car is stock except for Edelbrock intake manifold, carb, cam, MSD distributor, and exhaust pipes. Sometimes when I turn the key, EVERYTHING is dead including dome light, headlights, horn, and starter. Sometimes, everything is OK. And sometimes it starts OK and then dies at really inconvenient times.



I have replaced:

battery
battery cables
ignition switch on steering column
ignition switch connector

I'm looking for suggestions on what to look for/check out and how to isolate what is causing my problem.

Has anyone had a similar problem?

Had the same problem with my 62 Impala Station Wagon. The problem was in the firewalll disconnect plugs. I'd check yours for condition and security.

Check all ground's for clean connections at both ends, IE: No paint under the ground cable/strap.

I have heard of someone else that had an electrical gremlin, the culprit was a loose connection at the starter.
Check to make sure all the terminals are tight.

I'll be Frank, this hobby isn't getting any easier.

HELLO;
Had some of the same problems.
Does your electrical system have a stud someplace where the battery connects to that and has all the other hot leads connected to it too?
My recent purchase of a 67 Olds had one and come to find out, that piece was broken from over tightening! (bakelite)

Check the main harness plug at the firewall below the steering column. The outer portion under the hood and the inner portion under the dash are kept together with screws. Separate the 2 halves, clean and inspect. and then make sure the screws are tight.
