......not the car, but the people. I'm planning a road trip from Newfoundland to New York City in July. I understand that New York City can be intimidating to anyone who hasn't been there, especially driving in the city.

I'm looking for some recommendations on where to stay, maybe somewhere just outside the city, like New Jersey. Maybe I can get a hotel where I can park my car, and I can take public transportation into the city to do sight seeing and shopping.

This is kind of a bucket list thing I'm doing, and actually I'm doing it for Jake. I wanted to do a road trip, he loves New York City, so this is the plan!

If anyone has any tips, tricks, leads on decent hotels, public transport tips, etc....Let me know!

New Yorkers stay away from tourist.

Take the subway! I did it. I had never been on one either. You can jump to different trains and go in all different directions. Easy to use once you get the hang of it. Buy a multiple day pass. You can take the train from NJ to NYC. Take the subway to Brooklyn then walk back across the bridge!! Especially at night!! Amazing view. Once you are on Manhattan, you can walk around to most destinations.

A couple of years ago we made the same request of the Texas Chevy Talk group and were inundated with helpful tips and advice. It made our trip easy and enjoyable. I have never spent time in the NYC area but traveled around the areas north and west of there and met many wonderful NY residents. Have a great trip...I'll bet the CT folks will come through for you big time!

Wow Chevy_Crazy, I really thought the New York folks would come through for you! I guess we either found the only friendly people in New York when we were there... or they have all moved to other places that are happy to help out of town visitors.

I am sorry I was wrong about the NYC welcoming committee. Try Texas instead, friendly folks, good food and some amazing sites....They made us 'Jayhawks' feel welcome everywhere we went! Especially the folks at the Texas tourist Center on I-35 near the Texas/Oklahoma border.

Look out for the bed bugs in the hotels/motels. The rats are big enough to take your kid away from you.

Don’t go to the Bronx, unless you want to meet Jenny from the block.

When are you switching citizenship to American?

Don't go BROKE trying to look RICH. Act your WAGE!!

Early 90's I went to NYC for work and spent a long weekend there, stayed right by Grand Central Station. Didn't honestly find it all that intimidating; much like any other big crowded city except I guess more crowded than I'm used to. Hell I practically grew up in downtown Houston back before they started trying to make it "hip" and habitable again...

One thing that struck me funny is that I didn't have any trouble out of NY'ers but the first thing that happened when I got home to Houston is stopping at a gas station near the airport and having to deal with some obnoxious overly-aggressive panhandler. Huh.

Jason, I'll keep my eye out for those Rats.....and I don't know yet, lets see how this trip goes before I make the switch

Maybe I should try to find some place on facebook or other website to ask questions about New York, I wasn't sure I'd get much response here.

Actually Don, I'm from Grand Falls-Windsor, just 90km west of Gander! But I live in Paradise now near St. John's. I've got a full day of driving and a 7 hour ferry ride just to get out of this province. Phew. haha.
