Just bought a 72 chevelle. Can only read the first 7 numbers & letters. Last 6 are rusted off. Can I get a replacement vin tag?

Contact your local DMV for advice.

Tampering with a VIN plate in mostly all cases is illegal.

Only the state(s) can issue replacement VIN tag and it will involve the police inspecting the car to determine if its legitimate, e.g. not stolen, etc.

Most of the time you will not be able to put a replacement VIN tag on the car. Once the original VIN is called into question, the state will investigate the car and once satisfied the car isn’t stolen, the will give a state issued VIN and not use the original one. But things vary from state to state and since a lot of the VIN is still there, they may may let you use it if you have the correct VIN on the title.

partial vin numbers are stamped into the trunk opening on the drivers side. usually the numbers are filled with paint so you will have to sand paint off to find it. it will be almost under, if not covered by the weather stripping.
at least I found one there on my 70...

After 2 marriages 3 jobs and the death of my father who got me into working on old cars i am finally getting back to working on my '55

Actually those are not partial vins on the trunk lips. They are just model numbers used by the stamping plant to ID the steel stamp and sheet metal parts. Keep in mind the stamping plants made sheet metal for many other models and they had to have a means to keep track of which is which.

The confidential VIN's are hidden so as to prevent tampering. They are stamped under the heater box (under hood) before the box is installed. They are sometimes (depends on plant) also stamped on top of the cowl and later hidden by trim. Also the CON VIN is stamped on top of the frame rail rearward of the axle. Its on top where the body sits and very hard to find. That was the intention, hide them from car thieves so they could not remove them. On some models (and years) the CON VIN is also stamped on top of frame under drivers door.

CON VIN = VIN derivative = Partial VIN
Purpose-To deter auto theft and stamped by final assembly plants pursuant to state and federal laws.

Example of a con vin 19Z123456
1 - Chev Div (prior to circa 1967 the GM division was not always used)
9 - Model year ending in 9
Z - Final car assembly plant
123456 - Production serial number for that plant.

I would not buy any vehicle where any part of the VIN is damaged or suspect.
