Surprise. I've got a Carter W1 on the '50. It runs good, but I've seen sign of leakage from the carb. So I guess it needs to be rebuilt, but I don't feel comfortable ripping into the carb.

I've seen rebuilts on ebay, not cheap, but you get $100 for the core and a warranty. Does anyone have experience with these?

I live in Colonial Heights, Va. Where are you? It looks like you have a leaking bowl gasket. Have you tried tightening the screws?

With the choke automatic fast idle that is a 1949 W-1. The best and last W-1 made. Some of the internal parts fit the 1949 only so be sure to specify it is a 1949 when ordering parts.

Thanks, Gene. I've got a re-manufactured '49 W1 on the way. I think I read on here that the '49 W1 is a better carb than the '50 Rochesters. Don't know if that's true, but I'm replacing the '49 with a '49.

The early Rochesters made in 1950 and 1951 had a lot of problems. The 1949 W-1 - good choice if it is rebuilt correctly.

I thought it ran well before, but it runs even better with the new carb. No leaks, and the carb looks like brand new.

This, and the new radiator from 40's Chev were great investments.
