On my 98 Monte Carlo Z34 the left rear turn signal has stopped working. I swapped the two taillight bulbs and the bulb from the right did not work in the left socket but left bulb did work in the right socket so it is not a bad bulb.
I then checked the harness plug in the truck and did not get voltage on the yellow wire that goes to the left tail light. So assume there must be an open circuit forward, perhaps the steering column plug.
Does anyone have experience with this or suggestions?

Have you checked the fuse? Does the front signal work or is that whole side not working? If the front is working, then it is probably a broken wire. If there were a problem with a plug somewhere, more than likely the whole tail lamp would not work on that side.

Yep. Went thru the same thing on my '98M/C.
I replace the turn signal switch in the column. Borrowed a tool from O'Reilly's.
One (rear) side wouldn't work. Bulbs checked out OK. Thought I had it fixed 4-5 times. Also, the front blinker & inside indicator would work erratically (sometimes).
Parts are getting hard to find for some of these "old" cars.

Yes, everything else on that side works: the front turn signal and side marker n light, the dash indicator and brake light. Just the rear turn signal does not flash so the others flash very fast because not enough load light a burned out bulb. But the bulb is good as I swapped rear bulbs as mentioned before.
You replace the turn signal switch in the column. Where did you get a new switch and what too did you borrowed from O'Reilly's?

Switch I got from a Chevy dealer, altho the parts guy said it is an obsolete part. But he still had one. He was happy to get rid of it. So I got a discount. Probably find one at some auto parts store or online.
Switch replacement requires disassembly of the column. I had a Haynes manual which helped. Still, it could have been more detailed at times. Especially the elec connection under the dash. Worked on that for a couple hours. Took my cousin (who works on cars) about 30 seconds. There are several YouTube vids. I never thought of that until later. Some vids tell what size Torx & wrenches are needed. And how not to blow up your air bag!
The 'tool' needed is a "Lock Plate" compressing tool to remove (& reinstall) a snap ring. Could be done without it, but ALOT easier with it. I borrowed a steering wheel puller too.
After I got the switch out, I could easily see the contacts were worn. Too many left turns!
