I have a 2004 Silverado 1500 with a 5.3, it only has 75000 miles. I have always changed the oil regularly, all of a sudden in the last month a lifter will tick really badly at start up and it will smoke really bad. Only does it about once a week. Especially after its been run and it sits for about two hours. Just looking on incite on this. Hard for me to believe that with that low of mileage I am having this problem.

Google Castech heads and you will see numerous threads on the cracked head issue. My friends 04 had the same issue with smoking on start up. I did all the valve seals on it & it didn't help a bit. We ended up swapping out the heads on it, and no more issues.

I would check to see if you have the Castech heads, and go from there...
