I've tried looking around and I'm not finding much.

What is needed. I know one is drive by wire but if possible we would just swap intake setups and sensors and run a tune. Is there any out of the way changes needed?

I put a 2005 engine in a 2001 truck, and that swap went pretty well. It ran well without modifications, but since I have the CATS OBD2 tuner software I went ahead and grafted the 2005 fuel and spark maps into the 2001 code. That said, putting a 2012 engine in will be a lot more difficult. The 2008 and newer engines are Gen IV engines, and there are a lot of changes. The link below talks about several of those. I'm not sure it's possible, but at a minimum it will require some wiring changes to relocate the knock sensors and swapping the cam and crankshaft reluctor wheels.
