I have a new direct drive starter, new distributor, and a new battery. Cold starts fine but after it gets up to temp and you shut it off for 10 minutes or so it binds up and tries to kick back when starting. Set the time with computer when we put the new distributor in. It was at 0. Cold cranks fine and starts fine if you start it back immediately after shut off but let it set for a few minutes and I have problems. Any help greatly appreciated.

Does the truck have headers?

Not sure what headers would have to do with it. It sounds like a bad starter to me. Was it a remanufactured starter?

Headers can heat up a starter and make it not wanna crank until it cools.

I wonder why Fish22 added a new direct drive starter, new distributor, and a new battery. Was there a problem before the new parts?

Yes. When it got up to temp it was really hard to turn over. It had a new starter on it, the bigger style and it was really close to the exhaust. It did have a heat shield on it though. I had a mechanic look at it and he suggested a smaller and stouter direct drive type. That did help but didn't eliminate the problem.

2 things I'd try,

1) Turn the motor over twice by hand with a big wrench/socket when it is cold. Then do it again after it is warmed up. If there is little difference, then yes it is a starter system issue. If there is a big difference, you need to look elsewhere.

2) Try pulling the fan belt off and starting it when it's hot. Could be a pulley or accessory seizing up when it's warm.
