I see they're selling reproduction, 17-1/2", "Butteryfly", steering wheels, for these old Chivverlays, on that auction site we all know and love. I know a lot of guys have wanted a smaller wheel, and since the 51 Bus Coupe is no longer here, I don't know what a stock wheel measures. Pretty sure it's still larger in diameter than 17-1/2". There you go. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

The 1952 and previous stering wheels were 17 1/4".
The 1953-54 was 18". Diameter increased to make for easier (more leverage) steering.

It sure seemed like the 51 Bus coupe steering wheel was something that should have been on a ship. BIG, but I liked it that way; not a fan of power steering, brakes, etc, on older cars. I know a lot of guys had been wanting reproduction steering wheels for the 49-54 Chevrolets, like the Tri-Five guys already had available. The vendors sure are "proud" ($$$$$) of them! I was able to copy the words but not the pictures (2) of a steering wheel mod from CT in Dec. 2013.
Maybe you could research it.

Thank everyone for the complements. I’ll try to answer all the questions.

I used my stock 55 steering wheel and cut the rim off from the 3 arms. I then used a rim from a donor wheel that I think was a VW. It measured 16.5”. I used this size rim so that it fit with the original horn ring. If you go much smaller then the horn ring would need rework. This 1st image shows the comparison of the 2 wheels.

The new rim is then fitted to the stock hub and arms and welded together. I bolted the hub to a flat board to hold the wheel and to give me away to measure the new rim to get it flat.

It's all good. mostly

Hi Guys, I think the fundamental issue of fitting a significantly smaller steering wheel to our cars is that you are going to need power steering to maneuver and park at low speeds.
Otherwise you are going to lack the leverage to allow ordinary folk to drive the car around town.
