1998 MonteCarlo 3.1 w/auto & column shift.
My shift lever is extremely hard to move. I don't dare drive it, afraid it will break & leave me stranded.
I assume the problem is the shift cable. The cable (part#12458106) is discontinued. Can't find it online either.
Q... Is the 'cable' inside that sheath a solid wire or a braided cable? Could it be frayed? Was suggested to me to disconnect the cable from the shift lever, then see if the lever moves freely. So....
Q... How do I access that cable under the dash? Clinton & Mitchell manual=no help. Haynes manual says to "remove lower sound insulator panel and lower steering column cover". (??Are there 2 covers?) Then to "disconnect cable end from shift lever". Doesn't say how.
I crawled under the dash but can barely see the lever & cable, much less get my hand up there. How do I access it?
To replace the shift 'indicator' cable, Haynes says to lower the steering column. But doesn't explain how. Do I access it from above?
Also, has anyone installed a universal shift cable? How long do I need?
Hard to believe that only a cable from 97-99 M/C or Lumina will fit, since so many vehicles have the same trans.
And it's 15below today. Kinda cool out in the garage.
EDIT: Would be nice to find a detailed blow-up of the column & shifter.

Sorry, I forgot about this post.
Shifter cable = allegedly discontinued.
Remember I said there's probably a million cars with the same trans? And probably only diff is length of the cable? Shop wanted $800. Took me 3 weeks, but fixed it for less that $10.
