Does anybody have any projects you'll be working on during the Holidays? Let's show off our "garage inspirations" by posting some pictures of and some stories about the various projects, big or small, that you're cookin' up in y'alls garages and shops this year!

Project "YARD BIRD"

Some years ago I got it in my head to make a wire sculpture of a 1:10 scale B-17F 4 engine WWII bomber to put out in the yard as a "Christmas decoration" complete with chasing light string re-wired to make it look like the propellers are turning. (long story)

Well, anybody knows that a bomber needs an escort, so the next year I built a P-51C Mustang to accompany it. That kinda got out of hand and now I'm working on an identical P-51 for the mustang's wing man and a big beautiful twin-boomed Lockheed Lightning (P-38 J). All of these planes are the same scale so they look proportional to one and other. and I'm also known around here as "the guy with the planes in his yard". (go figure) Any body who drives up and down US 75 north of Dallas just south of the Love's has seen my yard birds.

Any how, here's some pics of what's on display, and what's in the shop in fabrication.

I build these things from hand drawn pencil plans, hand drawn AutoCAD plans and for the P-38 I'm using balsa wood plans I downloaded from the webs, scaled to 1:10 in AutoCAD and printed 1:1 on a couple of dozen letter sized sheets and used 2 rolls of scotch tape to put the plans together. (no plotter at work)

A Guillow's balsa wood model I built some time ago that I'm using as a "go-by"

Greg, that’s fantastic work and your a talented guy. Your patience and attention to detail is certainly commendable. You might find some interest in my daily routine in helping restore the big ones. About all the info I’m allowed to disclose.

Jack, you are my hero sir! If you ever call in sick, I'd love to fill in for ya!

My dad got me going when I was a wee lad. He took me to the old airbase at San Angelo when I was about 6 or 7 and I still remember the P-40N on static display with the shark's mouth painted on the nose.

Years later '74 or '75 when the Confederate Air Force was doing an airshow at Pete Field in C Springs, He got me into a '17 because he was Air force buddies with one of the crew there. It was the year they filmed the "Baa Baa Black Sheep" pilot. They had 3 or 4 F4-U's and a couple of SNJ's made up to look like Kates.

I remember Fifi was in the show. My dad was a photographer on those during the Korean war stationed out of Anchorage Alaska.

Jack,
I noticed the center pod in the foreground of the '38, or what's left of it - was this an old crash recovery from the war?

Love all of these, the lights and the real ones. I'd love to do a B-17 and an escort like those one day. That is beyond cool. I'd love to hear how you did the lights for the spinning props.

I made a little progress over the break,
but I was kinda busy building other stuff and smoking meat.

I'm starting the wings tonight!

Santa's workshop in full bloom:

With regard to the propeller wiring: I would love to show you how I did it on the first iteration of the bomber, but I have a much simpler way to do it now - I just use a controller with 3 pigtails. Then I wire one string per prop position, 3 props, 3 positions, 3 light strings. when I set the controller for "chasing" it fires off each prop position in sequence giving the illusion of a rotating pattern. Of course I snip & cut the LED light string to fit the model and that's still kinda tricky, but with a good Weller soldering iron and a whole lot of shrink tube, it comes out looking and working great.

I've actually been commissioned to do a piece for a lady in Dallas. go figure!

While looking back, in one of those Corsairs you saw as a young boy, was an acquaintance of mine, a Mr. Thomas Friedkin who flew his own Corsair in all of the episodes of Black Sheep. He has recently passed away, but he and his son were and are major customer's of ours. In fact, we have one of their F-86's in the hanger now. The old center section or cockpit area you referred to is indeed from an old crash site which we are using for some reference points and other things. However, I can't give you details on it's history.

Regarding the FG-1D Corsair under rebuild picture which I posted earlier, it belongs to Paul Allen of Microsoft fame and we delivered it to him a few weeks ago up in Washington State. A story about it just came out in this month's edition of 'Air Classics'. I'm attaching a couple of pictures of the two page article below. The big picture on top is the same aircraft back in 1996 when owned and flown by well known Warbird pilot Ed Shipley. I'm also taking the liberty to include a picture of me in my AT-6D which I flew in the West Texas Wing of the Confederate Air Force back in the 1980s.

Well, I'm fixing to be '83' next month, but still able to work in the finishing department and do final restoration and paint of interior parts, panels, skins and controls. Then it's back to giving my '50 Fleetline with the 302 lots of good old TLC. LOL

You have a great talent there and I could never do that I'm quite sure. So, congratulations on your work and dedication!

Trukr, since you like P-38s, we are the ones that brought back to life Lefty Gardner's P-38 'White Lightning' a few years ago. I was acquainted with Lefty having flown some airshows with him back in the day. Quite a guy! Anyway, here's an article about the rebuild and of course the plane is now owned by Red Bull. I was present when Steve Hinton came over from Planes of Fame to do the test flight and here's a picture I took of him doing a little low pass at us during that flight.

I laid out the elevator or rear "wing" on Saturday

I welded it up and attached the two booms on Sunday - It's starting to look like a Lightning!

I laid out the wing parts on Monday and welded the leading edge - tricky that. As you can see from the 2D plans, it sweeps back. But what you can't see from the plans is that it has an 8º vertical deflection from the center of the aircraft to the wing tips. I figured that out though, but the real challenge was locating it on the plane in the right orientation.

Welded the wing outline to the frame and tied everything together. 63" from wingtip to wingtip, 46" from nose to rudder.

Now that looks like a Lightning!

I still need to tweak the wing a bit, finish welding it to the frame along the trailing edge and straighten out the tips, but it's getting there.

I've been in:

"Miss Air Museum" now known as "Madras Maiden"
"Sentimental Journey"
"Liberty Belle" (now no longer with us)
and the Collings Foundation's B-24 - all 3 iterations: "All American", "Dragon and it's Tail" and "Witchcraft" as she exists today.

I went up in the Memphis Belle a few years ago. It was great, but I do wish it were the real one and not just the one used in the movie. A wonderful experience nonetheless.

You guys will probably love this. My wife got me a book on the Flying Tigers for Christmas. She cuts hair for a living and has a client that flew in the Tigers during the war. He signed my book for me yesterday and invited us to come hear some of his stories. He just got done doing an audio documentary on the Tigers. Unfortunately, the guy compiling the documentary just had a stroke, so it is on hold right now.

Mac was touched that I wanted him to sign my book. I was quite honored that he did it. I was almost in tears when my wife told me about his reaction. I've met him a couple of times and he is a great guy. Sad that he is one of the dwindling few left of the WWII vets.

Great experience Jay. They were the greatest generation. I last talked with Tex Hill at the air show down at Hondo, Texas, in September of 1981. Tex had been a guest at the Breckenridge show many times when I was flying in the CAF and we knew each other. He had also visited Major Keish in his home in Arlington often. A Triple Ace...
