I have a 54 Belair with powerglide im redoing, and a 54 150 with a 3speed parts car. Speaking of the rear axles assembly...are they the same (outside of gear ratio) and are they interchangeable. if not, what are the differences?

54 Belair 4 door. Auto.

Put together a piece at a time....twice.

If GM had as hard a time finding parts as I do they would have been out of business years ago.

The axle HOUSINGS will interchange.
The 49-50 and 51-54 axle SHAFTS will interchange, BUUUUUUUUUUT, the pilot on the 49-50 shafts is a larger diameter than the pilot on 51-54 shafts. OK, for those of you who don't know what the pilot is, it's the round protrusion in the center of the wheel flange which fits into the hole in the center of the brake drum/wheel.
The 49-50 cars had Huck brakes and 51-54 had Bendix brakes. Thus, the brake backing plate, brake hardware and brake drums for 49-50 and 51-54 are different. The brake backing plates and hardware are interchangeable from one HOUSING to the other.
The rear backing plate (that bolts to the center of the axle housing) and differential case are interchangeable and all the axle shafts have the same splines.

Now, as an additional bit of information, the entire rearend of 53-55 Corvettes is basically a slightly modified 51-54 pass car rear. The MAIN difference is that the Corvettes had an open drive shaft/U-joint instead of a torque tube differential------------- - BUT, the differential guts are the same. Also, the pads that are welded onto the housing for the leaf springs are different. Soooooooooooooo, if you need axle shafts or brake parts for your 53-55 Vette, 51-54 pass car parts will fit.
