Bought a $100 3spd to replace the OEM 3 spd "peanut".
Major crack on the shaft...

So AT we go, might as well get some comfort. But what will work and for how much?

Got a 10 inch plate and a 4 bolts housing.

Not thinking fancy, just easy build.

An automatic conversion of any type will be a lot more work and $ than replacing your stock 3 speed, or even upgrading to a better manual. A few questions first though:

1. Does your present 3 speed trans have a 4 bolt or a 7 bolt side cover?
2. Are you satisfied with your present gearing at highway speeds, or would you prefer that the engine be turning slower?
3. Do you prefer keeping your shifter on the column or would you be ok with a floor shift?

Thx Ray.

It's a 4 bolts, I am going back and forth between AT and another sag with synchro first this time.
Found a couple of rebuilt sag, but they are geared towards circle racers... 284/168 or 351/189

I don't remember what I have in the rear.

Even tho it would be nice to not shift gears and get more speed and mpg, and not get rid of the bench, I guess a manual will get it going again.

Now regarding the gearing, how bad would it be to throw the 351... Combo in this pick up? Undrivable? Wouldn't tow anymore?
I am toying with the idea of dropping the engine and transmission in a Datsun Z one day, but still need the truck to work in the meantime

When I inquired about the transmission I found from the speed shop if it would fit behind a 250 in a 67 c10 I got this for an answer:

YES WHEN YOU MUST SPECIFY TRUCK BELL HOUSING BECAUSE THEY ARE LARGE ID BEARING RETIANER THAN CARS

What should I be looking at, should this fit?

If you have a 4 bolt cover now and it's the original trans, your ratios are 2.94 and 1.68. The closest Saginaw full synchro is 2.85/1.68, and I have found that one to be a very satisfactory replacement for the 4 bolt. You could also use the 3.11 if you prefer, but I would advise against the 3.50 unless you have a specific need for that low of a 1st gear.

If you have a stock 67 truck bellhousing your bearing retainer is about 4.685". This size was also used on all passenger cars 55-up. 68-up trucks (but not passenger cars) are about 5.125".

In other words, you can use a 67-earlier truck trans or a 55-up passenger car trans with your present bellhousing. If you get a 68-later truck trans, you will have to replace its bearing retainer with one from a passenger car or 67-earlier truck trans. The replacement bearing retainer has to be for the same type of trans - a 4 bolt for a 4 bolt or a 7 bolt for a 7 bolt.

If you want to use a passenger car trans, that will be fine, except that its bottom two mounting holes won't be threaded like an original truck trans. In that case, just use longer bolts in those two holes and put nuts on them.

3.73 was probably the most common axle ratio in these years. However, there is no need to guess what you have as long as you can count up to at least 4.

Crawl under the truck and put matching marks on the pinion yoke and differential housing. Jack ONE rear wheel off the ground and chock the opposite front wheel if you are on anything other than dead flat ground. Put the transmission in neutral and the parking brake off. Can you turn the wheel easily? If yes, you have an open rear. If the wheel is difficult or impossible to turn, you have posi. In that case, jack BOTH rear wheels off the ground.

If you have an OPEN rear, turn the wheel exactly TWO revolutions and count (or have a helper count) the number of complete driveshaft revolutions and estimate any fractional revolution as closely as possible. The number of driveshaft revolutions plus the fraction is your axle ratio. If you have POSI, turn either of the wheels exactly ONE revolution and count the driveshaft revolutions the same as for an open rear.

Easier than you expected, isn't it?

I remember doing this trick because you mentioned it on the forum before, forgot about it, I have to do it again.

2.85x3.73=10.6305

I ll check the tire size next.

Thx for advice

If you are gonna put an auto in....the only reason to do it would be for the OD. Therefore 700R4 or the other one...I cant remember the # at the moment, 200R4?

Well, that wouldn't really be a reason, because you can always install a manual OD trans. To me, the ONLY reason would be that you are equipped with fewer than the standard issue number of legs.

Love the humor but hate the practicality:

I shot my knee / ankle and hip driving in the glorious Parisian traffic and later on driving pro in the easy town of LA.

As much as I like banging gears, I can't do it for long. The truck will get a manual.

Finding a manual OD is quasi impossible - to me.

Is that cracked bearing retainer the only issue? Then not a problem. Those things practically grow on trees. If you have a 67 trans with 4 bolt cover, you should be able to use almost any retainer for a 4 bolt back to 55, either car or truck. Even one off a scrap trans would be ok, and there are plenty of those lying around. Take the old one with you when you go looking.

I figured I could get something to fix it up, but putting a used trans with signs of weakness behind a remanufactured engine made little sense.
Hopefully I get to wrench on this this weekend.

We may have had a slight miscommunication here. When you said "4 bolt", I assumed you were referring to the type of transmission you have (4 bolts hold the side cover onto the transmission case), not the bellhousing.

Both 4 bolt and 7 bolt transmissions were used in 1967 trucks, and they have very little in common with each other, but they will both bolt to the same bellhousing.

Could you please shoot a pic from the other side of the trans so we can see what the cover looks like? Also, I am mystified by your non-stock crossmember since you still seem to have the stock bellhousing mounts.

That is a nice looking cross member that is on his truck!

I cannot say that I blame him as the transmission hanging out in space without the cross member looks like trouble as the stock set up looks to me!

Mount in, bolts right side up. The cross member pic was a mock up.

Current Hurst shifter Indy 500 no go on this Saginaw.
It hits at the breather up top and at the speedo cable on the side.

Anyone knows of something that fit?

Also the gear forks are mismatched, one of them is the wrong kind.

The previous transmission was a "peanut", hence no oem cross member.
