I have a 78 El Camino that I want to put new o rings in. I purchased the green o rings to put in it. The situation is that I did this along time ago. I made a mistake and used black o rings. There hasn't been any freon in it since 2003. Will it work to use brake cleaner and blow it out, when I am putting the o rings in? I plan to use nitrogen before the freon. I am in the process of changing from r12 to r134. Thanks in advance for your help.

Are you trying to flush the system?

I'm trying to clean and add new o rings. Then I would add nitrogen to clean. Then load with 134 freon.

My suggestion would be to use the green o rings even though it might take several years to get any type of failure from the black ones. Before you add the charge is the time to do it.

As far as flushing, I prefer to use 93% isopropyl alcohol that you buy in the store. It is a good flushing agent and evaporates quickly so you don't have a big mess to dispose of. It is flammable so you must be careful. I use a flush gun that is pressurized by shop air and it has worked quite well.

After flushing, I run shop air through for about a minute which pretty much dries everything up.

Pull a vacuum for about 45 minutes and charge.
