I need to get the lower horizontal trim piece off. The center part I have loose but the ends are giving enough resistance that I have to ask here before I mangle it.

The tool I'm using is like a plastic butter knife; can I use this or do I need a different tool?

Any tips or tricks as to putting it back on? Thanks.

You will probably need the trim tool that looks like an arrowhead. You slip the tool behind the moulding and slide it till you hit a clip. Then you tilt it to release the finger of the moulding clip. You can slip the tool you have pictured in to keep the moulding from re-engaging on the clip. You may have to use the tool on both sides of the clip since they usually have two fingers holding the moulding. You do that for each clip. You can do it with no tool if you can push the molding so that the fingers bend enough to rotate the moulding off of the other side of the clip.

Reinstallation is easy you tilt the moulding so the the finger side of the clip engages with the lip on the bottom side of the moulding. Then you push the moulding so that the fingers compress and push the moulding down to snap it over the clip.
