Not sure on your '78, I get water from the footwell behind the cab that finds it's way in.

I have Vintage Air in my '78 so I don't have the factory evaporator box anymore. But I don't recall any vent in the firewall. Are you certain it's not the heater core leaking?

Leaks can be tough. My preferred method of finding them is to take a hose and turn it down very low, til there is a little more than a trickle coming out. Then you start down low and work your way up while covering the suspected area. You will probably need to pull back your carpet and have another person looking for the leak to begin while you operate the hose. You'll also probably need to put your thumb over the end of the hose and spray the water at the lower areas of the firewall where the evap. box meets the firewall. Make sure you work your way up to the cowl and along the side of the windshield as well as the top of the windshield if the leak hasn't shown up while doing the lower areas. Make sure to work you way up slowly so that the leak has time to show up before you go up higher.

Some days it's not worth chewing through the restraints.
