Hello everyone happy to finally be back on a classic car forum it's been a few years for me so I'm getting my feet wet again. Just picked up a 76 Monte Carlo and it has a few electrical issues I could definitely use some help with. Here are the symptoms so far:

-Gen light comes on and stays on when car is started
-all dome and foot lights have been blown
-fuse for the heater blower motor was blown, I swapped it out with a new 25 amp fuse ran the heater motor for about 5 seconds and blew it out again plus a nice little puff of smoke came out of the engine bay towards the back of the motor I assume off of the wiring harness
-the fuse for the AC compressor (forget what it's called) that keeps it from kicking on when there is low freon was also blown.

I'm fairly certain there is too much voltage going through the system coming out of the alternator. I have to go pick up a new multi meter and check for sure but I wanted to get some thoughts from everyone as to what's going on. Thanks in advance

I'm no electrical expert, but the alternator could have a bad voltage regulator and you could have too much voltage coming out of it. The multimeter will tell you if it is. Usually it is a bad diode that makes the gen light come on, but there are other reasons. Blown fuses are usually from power contacting ground or too much draw on the circuit, but that is assuming the correct voltage is present. If I were you, I'd check the voltage coming out of the alternator first and see if it is actually charging. Then if the alternator proves bad, replace it and see if your other problems persist. The puff of smoke could have been a fusible link going up. They are there to protect the circuit and will need to be replaced if that is what caused the smoke.

There's power wires that come from the starter to the inside that route behind the engine block. That puff of smoke may be a pinched wire ,like mine was . Got caught when I put my intake back on. Check that part . It is possible that it has been stripped back or spliced together. Also,there's a fusible,link that acts as a fuse at the start on one.
