Early Chevy IIs with 4 and 6 cylinder engines had Powerglides that were air cooled. Those would not be suitable for a 350. But I think by 1966 they had gotten away from that and used an oil cooler in the bottom of the radiator, and those transmissions would be suitable.

Look to see if the transmission/car has transmission oil cooler lines to the radiator. The air cooled transmissions didn't have them, and had large holes in the bellhousing, and cooing fins on the torque converter.

I agree with Rick that an air cooled PG would be a bad idea behind a V-8. The base 6 cyl in a 66 Chevy II was a 194. A 230 was an option, but not very frequently ordered.

Those who choose an automatic transmission want transportation. Those who choose a manual transmission want to drive.

I'd recommend you spend about $16.00, and get a copy of Carl Munroe's book, "Powerglide Transmission Handbook-How to rebuild or modify Chevrolet's Powerglide For All Applications". You'll learn more about the Powerglide transmission than you ever wanted to know. It's published by HP Books, and they are also available on E-Bay. Your 66 Nova/Chevy II trans will physically bolt to a 350, and will work, but for how long is anyone's guess. There are lots of beef up tricks you can use to strengthen the trans; the most important one is to swap to a machined steel direct hub in place of the cast iron one (weak), and up the lined plate count to at least 5. Shift kit the valve body. If you keep the modulator circuit it will shift solid, block the line to the modulator, and it'll loosen the fillings in your teeth on WOT shifts. If the trans is air-cooled, remove the vane from the torque converter (spot welded on), along with the air turbine assembly; replace that with the plain old inspection cover. Add an external transmission fluid cooler. The 153 tooth flex plate will work, as will the starter motor. In the 51 Chevrolet Business Coupe my nephew and I built, we used one of my built Powerglides. It was an air-cooled unit, modified with a shift kit, no modulator, and a stock/wide cast iron direct hub for 5 plates. We kept it air-cooled. A mildly built 350 was used in front of the Glide, and 4.88 gears in the rear end. This was a sort of Street Gasser build/car. Left to shift automatically the shift from 1 to 2 was "soft", full throttle manual shifting, and it'd knock the fillings loose in your teeth. My only worry was the wide cast iron direct hub, but it held up to everything we threw at it. I would have normally kept the modulator for a street car, but the transmission mount we made would't clear the modulator, so I plugged it using a delete kit. I've used the 1.82 planetaries in ALL my drag cars, a big block 56 Chevrolet Pro Bracket Car, a FED Super Pro Bracket Car, and my RED Super Comp Dragster; never has any issues with breakage. Some guys do however; the 1.76 first gear planetaries are stronger. There's only .06 difference in ratio between the 1.82 and 1.76 planetaries, and you won't notice any difference. So, use your Powerglide, but beef it up a little. JMO.
