Years ago on this forum, someone showed a photo of a mystery hole that was visible on the lip of the body when the lift gate was in the down position. Could this factory hole be there for a valve stem for an air shock addition? I ask because I am looking for the hole for my 68 el Camino and thought about this question. Nomads are wagons, aren't they? This is my first visit to the Earth.

Nomads are wagons, but they wouldn't have had factory air shocks.

I always guessed that it was planned to hold a push button switch to turn on the dome light when the tailgate was opened. After the dies were made to stamp the part, they decided the switch would not hold up to being exposed to moisture. So the idea was scrapped and replaced with a manual switch just inside of the tailgate opening.

I don't know if my guess is anywhere close to what happened or not, but it seem logical to me.
