Is the restrictor valve required for proper heater output?

Shortly after installing a new water pump my heater hose restrictor valve "disassembled" one night when several miles from home. As a quick fix I replaced it with a open -- shut valve about the same length. Ever since then I have had reduced heater output (yes, the valve is wide open).

Around town at moderate speeds I get OK heat but not what I used to get. Out on the "Autobahn" the faster I go the less heat. At 75 there is hardly any heat at all, especially in last week's temps in the teens and twenties.

Actually, the restrictor is to prevent over-cooling via the heater core. The idea is that in extremely cold weather the heater running will prevent the motor from coming up to temp since the heater is on the bypass side, so it runs the real risk of overcooling the motor during the warmup phase. The restrictor is to make sure the motor comes up to temp as quickly as possible and due to the size of the heater core/piping it allows for adequate hot coolant flow to provide ample heat to the interior/defroster.

No, that isn't the purpose. It is there to keep the core from failing due to higher flow at higher RPM. Yes, you need it so get one at the auto parts store. The replacement ones from auto parts don't look exactly like the OEM one but work fine.
