My mother is giving her 2001 Chevy Impala to my daughter for her first car and it has some issues that I need to address.

The main one is dealing with electronics (specifically dash instruments and radio) Yesterday when starting it the radio said "Locked" and would not work but then started working after about 15 minutes of driving. Also the dash digital display section constantly flashes through check engine, battery indicator, service engine etc. Also intermittently the dash does not work at all (no speedometer, rpms .... nothing) then begins to work but still flashes messages in the notification section. That cleared itself after driving a bit but then went out again. I was told it could be the command module.

Just looking for any input on options and ease of repair / replacement and cost. Also the AC will not blow cold, it seems like the compressor is not kicking on. Not sure if this is related to the electronics problem but cant be sure.

My plan would be to fix the electronics / module problem and see if the AC begins working. If not then i would address the AC problem later.

Thanks in advance

I have heard that .... I assume BCM stands for Body COntrol Module ?

I have seen re-furbished ones for sale online but I assume even if I obtain one and install it on my own it still needs to go to a Chevy dealership to be re-programmed? Someone also told me that i may not need a new one but the old one just may need re-programming. Is this true?

I would say no, I do a lot of used car lot repairs and have replaced them without reprogramming but you do have to do the key dance for the security system.

Hey guys.... thanks for the input. I do have a follow up question based on some new findings today. Made an appointment with Chevy dealer to bring the car there tomorrow to perform a diagnostic on the BCM and see if that is the culprit. When my mother in law went to start the car this morning it was dead so she called AAA and they towed it over to my firehouse since i am working today. Put it on charge and it started right up. The weird thing now is..... none of the previously mentioned issues are happening now. Instrument panel is working fine, radio is working ok and for some crazy reason the AC is now blowing cold (when it was just blowing hot air last time)

Opinions on what could be going on? There is a third party remote starter that was installed that one of the guys I work with said could be causing those problems so to rule that out we did cut power to it but before we did that all problems were gone.

Still plan on taking to Chevy tomorrow because there is a recall item to be taken care of (oil gasket to prevent oil from leaking on exhaust manifold) but just wondering if I still need to pay the money to have a diagnostic done.

Would appreciate any input

How did you make out with dealer diognose? Did you mom have car parked for few months or more? I had my 2001 Impala sit for 3 months due to surgery. When I did get out to start it, I had same dash issues you described. My cause was that squirrels had dinner on few underbody wires. Once wires were all fixed, dash problems went away
