Just had the transmission replaced for my 1988 C1500. Now the speedometer doesn't work and my mechanic says I need an instrument cluster part. I can't see how the instrument cluster is affecting my speedometer. Also, mechanic says he replaced the speedometer sensor when he replaced the transmission. Says he can't find an instrument cluster part to repair the speedometer. Help.

Clarification - Mechanic is referring to the entire instrument panel assembly as a cluster. He says replacing all gauges is cheaper than replacing part by part.

Likely it is a problem with the vss wire. Green I believe. I doubt it is the cluster itself.
that was before the DRAC setup introduced in 1992.
If it worked fine before but did not after then it is usually either wrong part or wire got pinched or broken
