So I'm going to look at a 1984 S10 with 100k. It has the 2.8L V6. I've heard extremely mixed opinions on this engine. Ranging from complete garbage to lasting 200k+ no problems.

Does anyone have any wisdom they can share about this particular engine/truck. I would be purchasing it as a travel truck, meaning it's gonna see a lot of cross country driving and I prefer not to be stuck on the side of the road

You posted in the wrong spot. There is a S10 section in the truck section.

That said, the 2.8 runs like a strong 4 cyl and my father in law had an early 80s Citation w/a 2.8. When my mother-in-law started digging around on the floor for something it had, about 220K? on it (shortly afterwards, she went off the road and rolled it). It was on its 3rd transmission (the original, an Amaco trans (that lasted as long as the original) and then another rebuilt Amaco), The 1st trans and the 2nd last 80-90K (it has been awhile).

IF I remember right, the only problems that they ever had w/it was transmissions.

It got 30mpg on the freeway and was running good till the end.
