Hey guys, long time listener first time caller. Actually I do more in the truck section as I am actually working on an 87 k5 blazer. But I'm currently building a 355 TPI. The system is the MAF system. Running the 1227165 ecm. On my truck currently is set up with a mechanical speedo cable. I was told I may need to put a speed sensor between my transfer case and speedo cable. I know it's a long shot but does anyone know if I will or will not need to do this?
Thanks for any input!

MAF setup on those is JUNK. I would recommend a 7730 ECM swap and run MAP. You can also run the 165' ECM with a MAP if you use the Australian Holden $12P code. As for your speedometer the 87 had TBI to start with. As such it already has a 2000 PPM VSS. If you are tuning the chip, a single switch can be thrown in the calibration to enable the 2000 ppm VSS pin on the ECM and you can use the same speed signal the TBI used. No matter how you look at it you are going to tuning the ECM to run TPI on your 355 in your K5.

My non-expert opinion...

My Camaro runs the same ECM that you're planning on using. It gets its road speed input from the speed sensor (VSS) in the back of the mechanical (cable-driven) speedometer.

If your Blazer has a mechanical speedometer it should already have a VSS. I would think you could get the VSS signal to the '165 ECM from the same place as the existing ECM does.

IIRC, the VSS is either in the transfer case or in the speedometer head.

Thanks for the reply.
Originally I was gonna go with the 7730 ecm but I haven't been able to find the harness and ecm at a fair price. A friend of mine has the 7165 setup and is willing to trade me for a nib crane cam + lifter kit. He has all the sensors as well (more than likely I will only use the MAF sensor and buy new for the rest. And yes I was already planning on having the ecm tuned for my application.
Why are the MAF systems junk? I've heard they make tuning much easier.
