Hi,
Just wondering if anyone knows the part number or a cross reference number for the lower steering column bearing, the stepped bearing, (column auto) for a 1968 Impala? Having trouble finding a replacement one. Just wondering if NTN,Timken, SKF etc make such a bearing to suit. Thanks in advance.

I remembered seeing a listing for a lower bearing on ebaymotors. When I originally saw your post I didn't think I could find the ebay listing again but I did.

Here's part of the description with PN:
This assembly replaces GM adapter # 5698365 & bearing # 7806142.

This seller seems to be an expert in steering column bearings. They also list this as a bearing for Non-Tilt... presuming that means the tilt column bearing is different.

Here's the link and description:
1967-68 Camaro, Chevelle, Nova, & Impala Non Tilt Lower Bearing - Made In USA!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/67-68-Chevelle-Ca maro-Impa...

and because this auction might be over by the time you see it the seller is: cjsrods73j3

I also found a helpful post on a camaro forum which states the 67-68 bearing is no longer available but that the 69 bearing will work with a small alteration to the holder. Another person apparently took the measurements to a local store selling bearings and matched it.

I know you are essentially trying to do the same as the person who found an alternative number. If you've measured yours maybe there is an online bearing reference guide. I had a book someplace as well so if you know the dimensions post them and I will try to find the book.

Hope that helps,
Scott

Hi Scott,

Thanks for all the info. I did finally track down a bearing, has taken me a while though. Will keep this info on hand. Parts here in Australia are somewhat harder and more expensive to find and purchase. Thanks again. Steve.

Yes I know this is a very old topic now but I supplied the information above. Sometimes we post information which can help remind us in the future so I needed to search for that old post. When I read the comment I made about modifying the 1969 retainer which states the 69 bearing can work if you modify the retainer it made me wonder if the 1969 retainer would work on 1967-1968. I now see that The Parts Place has a kit for 1969 Tilt which includes the retainer.

Here's the link and description:
1969-02 GM Cars Lower Upgraded Steering Column Bearing Kit
https://www.ebay.com/itm/332309363891?hash =item4d5...

Anyone have experience with using the '69 lower tilt column bearing on a 1967 or 1968?

Scott
