Wow. Great read, on many levels.

I can't even fathom how frustrating that situation must have been.

I can't understand the desire for someone to hold on to something (with seemingly no attachment), knowing someone else has such a connection to said object. Complete lack of perspective, reality, and potentially, lack of compassion.
Absolute shame.

I'm no doctor, but I suspect you're right in calling it a sickness.

Here's my car. My dad bought it new, right out of college in May 1966. He almost bought a vette, but he didn't want to go into debt and he could pay cash for the Impala. His first trip in the car was to New York from Seattle, and he says he made it in 2 days. It's an Impala SS convertible with a 327 and powerglide. The car was our family car for my whole childhood, including trips to Canada and Mexico.
When I started driving in '86, my dad bought himself a Toyota Supra, and then I got to drive the Impala to high school. When the engine finally wore out after 230,000 miles, my dad gave me the car and I rebuilt the engine. It was my daily driver until '98, when it was in bad need of everything. It's been way too long of a restoration process with family priorities getting in the way often, but the paint is finally finished and I just need to assemble it. Below are some pics.

I paid $1100 for mine ($1400 asking price) in 1985. It was a '65 SS 396/Turbo 400 car. Very solid but needed a total restoration. I did a stock build but changed the color from turquoise to black. Eventually decided to get into NMCA nostalgia superstock drag racing with a new 468ci engine, transbrake and 4.56 gears. Best et was 11.29. Here are a few pics, before and after.

Very impressive!

I take it those were functional cold air inlets with ducts running up to the carb?

What a great story. Good old Trading Times. I would look through them for hours . Great way to waste some time. Now I have eBay motors for that.

Bought used in 1968 after I got home from Army. Traded in 1970 on a Chevelle SS 454.

In 1968, I paid about $1,700 for a '65 SS 327. White with black interior. The car had about 5,000 miles on it. Sadly, I never took a picture of it.

I was stationed in Honolulu just back from Vietnam. Low miles was due to the fact that there are very few places to go on the Island of Oahu. When I left for the mainland I sold it to another Marine for about the same money.

I still remember the Hawaii TV car ads that said "complete with a deleted heater".
