Hi guys,
I have a 1979 Chevy Luv with only 20,000 miles that has run beautifully up until about a week ago when I started hearing a knocking noise in the engine. At first I thought it was something like rod knock or piston tap, but now I don't think so as the knocking isn't constant. It only starts knocking when you "overexert" the car, by which I mean go up any kind of hill or try and push it past about 20 mph. Any ideas on what this could be?
Thanks!

It sounds like it is "pinging". Add octane booster or put premium (92 octane) unleaded fuel in the truck and see if that takes care of the issue.

I originally thought the same thing, but wouldn't the knocking be constant if it were pinging? Right now it only knocks when I push it past a certain point. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Not necessarily, Carbon knock can sound a lot like a knocking noise.

Have a look at this....

Mystery solved! The mechanical oil pump was loose and made a knocking noise once there was no oil to actually pump. Thanks for the ideas though!
