Hi,noob here, really need help. Yep, I'm a woman, I don't have any help, and I don't what I'm doing. Would appreciate kindness, mercy, and advice.

My dad left me a 1980 Monte Carlo. I'm trying very hard to decode the VIN. The car does not run. The hood seems to be locked up and I can't open the trunk either. The only place I see the VIN is on the front windshield. It is rusted. Only rust on the car. Anyway, it is extremely hard to make out.

I finally came up with 14 digits. I have been to several websites and tried really hard to figure out what number or letter I have wrong or which is or is not part of the VIN. The courthouse told me I had it partly right and partly wrong. No further help from them.

Anybody know how to get the rust off safely? I tried to slide a pencil and paper down there to sketch over it, just too tight a fit between the windshield. I'm sure the VIN is under the hood. I just don't have anyone to open it for me. Would anyone be willing to help me decode it?

Secondly, I'm thinking of maybe selling it to someone who would be interested in fixing it up. I don't have anyone picked out. I thought for many years that I would pay someone to fix it up for me since it is sentimental to me. But maybe not. The car doesn't run due to something wrong with the engine. I would say it is in fair condition on the outside. No rust. The paint has faded. Red in color. The inside is tan colored. The inside is not in bad condition. I was dumb enough to put a tarp over it and now it has mold. I think it can be cleaned up. The headliner is rotted now but other than that Mrs. Lincoln, I guess it is in fair condition inside.

Could anyone tell me a fair price to ask for the car? I am truly overwhelmed with the amount of info on the internet about this.

If you have read this far, thank you. If anyone could help me out here I would greatly appreciate it. If so, I'm happy to answer any questions, here or in pm.

If you could post pictures of the car that would help the folks here come up with a guess on the price / value.

Happy with the help and support you got here?

redapple,

Welcome. I echo Tony ... pics would certainly help in determining value, etc. That would be a start, anyway.

It would help to know where you are located as there may be a ChevyTalk member that may be able to take a look at it. Filling out Profile.
Go to My Chevy Talk at the top of the forum. Then "control panel" then "Public Profile".
Just fill in the ones you want displayed.
If you have the title or registration it should have the VIN # on it.
If you become a supporting member there is an icon when you post that you can post pictures directly from your computor.

Can you open the driver door? The VIN should be listed on a sticker inside (on the door).

I'd say keep it! But... I'm a monte guy to heart. If the car has been sitting that will happen. Post a pick or 2 the ask the same question. It's kinda like we are shooting in the dark on a red monte carlo. I belive the is a Vin number somewhere on the frame. Not sure where but sonewhere!

It may seem obvious, but do you have any title, registration or insurance paperwork of your dad's that would have the VIN on it? Short of that, you can sometimes get the hood open by having someone press down on the front of it while pulling the release. There is usually a sticker on the door jamb with the VIN on it as well.

Be careful of the stickers on any door panels. I live in the rust belt. If the car saw salt it may have had the door etc. replaced. Also if there was an accident in its past it may have had a panel replaced and thus the sticker changed. The vin is on the windshield and I believe somewhere on the frame. The title will also have this information.

If you plan to sell this then the buyer is going to want to verify that the title and the car by the vin.
