I believe my sbc350 engine was built in 77 & fitted into an Impala that was registered in 78, is there any way to find out what HP it had from factory? Thanks

Stupid me, I figured the link would go to the page in question. It's page 47 of 63, if you haven't already found it...

Yes I did find it cheers, how much roughly do you reckon a wilder cam, a rebore & a new Holley 4 barrel would add to the 170? Thanks

Well I'm no expert, but you can get a good clue yourself by down loading the free "CamQuest" from Comp Cams website. It's a virtual dyno where you can get good suggestions to your weight of car, the purpose you want the cam to fill etc.
It's quite fun benchracing

I'd say closer to 250hp is easy. Closer to 300hp you'll need headers and a larger exhaust.

You can change gearing to make it more "peppy". The easiest way to "torque multiply", is to just change to a higher stalling torque converter.

You can install a th700 or th200 to get a lower 1st gear (and an overdrive)

You can swap the rear axle to another with lower gears. But it's propably faster to get a new rear gear for the one you have. It's not an easy job if you never did anything like it before.

Apparently you can use it online to now:

These things have already been done to the engine

You really need to pick a cam for your application to get what you want. When doing the Camquest comparison, you will see how very different results you are getting with two similar cams.
And that is only a program. In real life the variations are greater. It easy to mismatch so some "improvements" actually cancel eachother.

I can't trace the person who built the engine & I keep getting asked what the BHP is so if I had a rough idea that'd do for now

So you need to go to a 1/4mile and get a bunch of time slips then Anywhere close to Santa Pod?
There are rules of thumb for hp for a certain weight of car doing the 1/4 mile in so and so many seconds. Pretty sure there are plenty of road dynos around too.

It's impossible to say even close how many hp you have now without the actual number on cam, heads, compression.

Then we have the G-Tech pro gadget for probably less than two hundred Pounds, that gives a pretty good idea. I would get one of those. Serious streetrace drag racers used those to tune their cars, so they have got to be better than "seat of the pants feeling"-guage...
