I have a 72 Monte carlo with a 350. When I got it the temp gauge didn't work. Someone else had started works my on it at some point. That's part of my problem lol. I bought a new temp sending unit from Orielly's. There were 2 wires twisted together. The green wire that goes to the gauge and a wire that has fire to it when the switch is on. When I hooked it up it melted the hot wire and ruined the new sending unit. I got a new unit and installed yet again. I only hooked up the green wire. Before that I grounded the green wire and the gauge hand went all the way to hot. So I reckon the gauge works. So I plug only the green wire into the temp sending unit and the hand starts to rise. It goes all the way to about 240 before I turn the car off. It never went down. I Seriously doubt that the car was actually getting that hot. Also every time I would hit the brake pedal the needle would move up. Someone told me I had the wrong sending unit and needed one with 2 prongs. So I got one and hooked that second wire back up. I have nothing. Gauge isn't working at all. IM completely stumped.

If it has 2 wires or connections, it's a switch for a "idiot" light. A gauge sender only has 1 terminal. Link to senders.
Does your gas gauge work? It sounds like the instrument panel may not be grounded, if the brake lights affect a gauge.

I reckon the gas gauge works. I've only had the car a week. I put $20 in and the gas gauge did move. One of those two wires has current running to it. Should it? The one that makes the guage hand move does not have any power. Do you have a clue where I could ground it? Thanks

Also, just a thought, if Orielly's was to have sold me the sending unit for a light instead of a gauge could that be my problem? I mean when I tried just hooking up that green wire. Orielly's is known around here for selling the wrong parts. The temp hand slowly climbed up but never came down at all. And the thermostat is new and didn't seem to be overheating. The gauge said it got up to 240ish. But I really don't think it it did. I think the gauge was just wrong

Take the list of senders in the link to the parts store and get a sender that IS NOT for a light.

On that list they all say with light. That's another thing that's racking my brain. This really shouldn't be so difficult lol

STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS Part # TS6T,STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS Part # TS6, and ACDELCO Part # G1852 doesn't mention a light and all have only one terminal. Use the green wire only if the car has a gauge.

Ok, I finally got it figured out. I appreciate your help. I was told by the guy that I got the car from that he just replaced the thermostat. Wether he did or not I don't know. But anyways the thermostat was bad. So the car actually was getting that hot. The gauge with the one wire actually did work as it should. I was assuming that the thermostat was working properly. But now that I put a new thermostat in its working great. Thanks for your help. I'm sure I'll be asking for more help soon lol
