I am trying to restore the rear end in my project and need to take it somewhat apart to replace a leaky gasket. It would be easier if I could take the drive shaft and part that attaches to the differential off the axel for ease of restoration. How does the drive shaft separate from the axel housing? I don't want to open a can of worms and take something apart that I shouldn't. Is there a manual or book that I should have for this project? Thanks!

The only rear this old I have looked at appeared to come apart in generally the same way as later ones, except that the procedure for removing the axle shafts was different. Basically, you have to unbolt the ball housing and U-joint from the trans. Then pull the axle shafts and unbolt the center section from the axle housing.

Keith Hardy's site has a 1925 service manual, which might be of some help with your car.

If you have never done this sort of thing before, my suggestion would be to go very cautiously, because you will be dealing with parts which will probably be difficult to find replacements for.

Thank you so much for the link to the manual. That is going to be a huge help in the whole process of restoring the complete chassis. I'm not wanting to take the rear apart as I feel I'm not up to the task of getting it all back together. I think I will research to see if I can just clean it up and use gasket seal of some sort to seal it back up and paint it as a whole.
