Finishing the interior POR-15 and making backseat trunk panels today. Tomorrow the wiring harness goes back in "for keeps".

For the last few weeks, I've been redoing the wiring and trying to clean things up a bit. This coming month I plan to rebuild the original gauge cluster and vacuum wiper motor, finish wiring, and build small front and back consoles to house a new stereo, cup holders, speakers, USB chargers, and storage. Here are a few pics.

I've looked at several ways to install a stereo, but I don't want to hack up the dash, the original speaker grill, or the rear windshield sill plate. I thought about custom carpentry and then found these: 1950s era film projectors for $25 each. I plan to use the cases to build front and rear consoles. They will hold the stereo, speakers, cup holders, and USB chargers, plus a little storage. AND, they match the shape and original interior colors of the car, so I may not upholster them. The Bell and Howell case will look nice between the shifter and the dash and the DeJur case will look nice sitting on the back seat trans tunnel. Both will need a bit of arched trimming to fit the hump.

I'm just over here taking my time and doing my thing. Front radio console is done, and the gauge cluster, clock plate, and glove box are now restored. Bonus: the clock is mint and WORKS.

Thanks Bill! I really struggled with it too, in other ways. I needed something bubble shaped like the car and the old Bell and Howell projector fit the style. I've seen lots of bad plywood consoles on the internet and I just didn't want to go that route.

Mocking up the heater to reroute air ride wiring...I also can't wait to restore the steering wheel and horn in the next few weeks. That's a new horn ring, horn swivel kit, and an NOS steering wheel cap I bought last year.

Thank you! I may have to slow down and back peddle a bit. In my excitement to get the dash done, some of the wiring in the last two weeks has gotten a little sloppy on the routing. I need to go back and clean that up with zip ties, trimming a few circuits, and even soldering on a few extensions. I've been a little too much in a hurry lately.

This weekend I restored the steering wheel and horn ring. I used Fibral to build up a broken off lip around the center cap. I also used two part epoxy to fill cracks. Then I sanded and painted. Next I installed a horn contact rebuild kit and a repop horn ring. I'm very please with the results!

Poppers were done last week! Here is a video:

What's poppin'?

Now I'm onto the Speedway fuel sender and Gauge interface module! This will allow the '65 Mustang gas tank to talk to the 1950 Chevy OEM Gas gauge! It works; video coming soon!

Not much to report lately. The Speedway interface causes the oem gas gauge to buzz, so I am awaiting a .01 and a .1 uf capacitor to put inline in the circuit to eliminate the feedback. I got a nice explanation and diagram from a guy on another forum. In the mean time, I tuned up the car yesterday and she's running real nice now. The fenders are off for a little patch work, and then it's onto the next thing... aux fans for the radiator.

Last night I installed the Aux. fans for the radiator and tonight I hope to do the wiring. Then it's back to the hood and deck lights and the "buzzing" fuel gauge. Next week it's back to a few bits of remaining sheet metal work, including my son's Bronco. (Spring Break for us!) Then this process should be all downhill into the summer. Lots of easier jobs ahead!

The fans are wired up nice and cleanly now, and I tested the fans. There is a video below of the fan test. .I still need to install the hot wires to the battery terminal, but I am looking for a nice remote terminal block since my starter terminal is already full with the battery cable and the air ride power leads. I also need to run the wire to the switch under the dash. Remember, I now have all those empty Aux switches I added to my radio delete plate. All will be used eventually!

Last night I received and tested out installing a .1 and .01 uf capacitor inline with the gas gauge, runtz reducer, sending unit, and Speedway interface. Now about 98% of the buzzing sound is gone! I am thankful for an electronic genius over on another forum. The question is, can I get it to be totally silent? We'll see. I might try adding a few more ground wires here and there. Not sure why this issue hasn't cropped up for other 6 volt to 12 volt conversions. I seem to be the only one I can find on the internet experiencing this!

By the way, nine years ago yesterday, we made our first visit out into rural Indiana to see this car "up close" as it was rotting away in an old man's pasture. It took another two years of haggling to buy the car back, but now we're about one year away from completing the full restoration! Here are a few before and after pics as a reminder how far we've come!

Have you tried a 12 volt gauge instead of reducing to the line?
