Finally, an update. The donor frame from 2ndtimer is repaired, pressure washed, dried out with a kerosene blower heater, and I started coating with POR-15 this afternoon. I hope to finish the painting this week, and then coat the inner rails with a wand and 3M Cavity Wax later this week!

I've hit a wall. I'm at a real cross roads and don't know what to do. I have a beautiful and sturdy donor frame all cleaned, prepped, and painted. My dream has been to do air ride suspension, and I'm getting cold feet. I have the money, my time frame is slow, so that is not a factor, and I have talented welders I can pay to do the structural welding that is out of my league. This is three weekends in a row that I've had time to work on the car, and haven't had the will to make a decision. Anyone experienced this? Part of me is considering buying lowered uprights and lowering blocks and calling it done.

Exciting news! Tomorrow I am going to purchase and pick up a complete 1957 rearend and drive shaft with 3.55 gears! A friend has one for $125! The only thing missing is the backing plates, but I have a set of bendix plates off a 3.70 rearend. According to the Master Parts Catalog, all the car backing plates were the same from 51-57, correct? This will hopefully jumpstart my enthusiasm a bit. As mentioned above, I have been in a rut, and I think I wore myself out getting the car to the 30th reunion. Here's to exciting days ahead! P.S. I know the original open drive shaft will have to be shortened or replaced, but he's including it for the price! Now to find a T5!!!

I got it! It's actually a 1955 3.55 rearend but that works too. I understand that the bearings are a bit smaller and it doesn't have positraction, but for $125, I can't complain. It's real clean and came off a running car my friend parted out a few years ago. Teeth look great! Also the '55 doesn't have a drain plug like the '57, but I'll live. Here are a few pics!

I bought a supposed 57 rear end from a guy who had bunches of them. I took it to a local gear shop (Zimmers) for check out etc before I installed. Turned out was a 56 .. no harm no foul. It happens but since I really don't abuse it , I'm happy.

Well, it was my misunderstanding. If you look further back in my posts, he was my buddy that offered me a '57 pumpkin for $50. I asked him last week if he had a complete 3.55 rearend, and when he said "yes", I assumed it was the '57. I am fine with it. It looks great and the price was unbelievable. I tried to give him an extra $25 for delivering it and he declined all but $5. Great man!

I used a Astro van driveshaft, after removing the astro counter weighted spline bit,and replacing with a Camero part.
This was a T5 and 57 rear end.
As I remember the tube was 50in eye to eye,the Camero was52in

I've heard that the Astrovan T5 also has preferable gears if you can find one.

Good to know about the Astro T5,although I have never seen one.
Forgot to mention that I used a converison universal joint to mate the Astro shaft to the 57 rear.
The only tricky part was mounting the 54 e cables to the 57 backing plates.Err,OK,I mickey moused it.Only because the 53cables were new.

Today my son and I laid out the new 3.55 rearend for mock up, remounted the hoghead to the axle housing to keep dirt out and for mock up, wire wheeled the donor front crossmember, and cut the first of the two air bag notches in the crossmember. Pretty good day!

Alas! I finally get a weekend off, and then a full week for Spring Break. The plan is to install a custom T5 transmission crossmember from Hotrod Works. It arrived yesterday! I've also ordered my front Slam Specialty air bags, bag plates, and shock relocation brackets from Gambino Kustoms. Soon we will order the Gambino rear notch kit and 4 link rear suspension. I am hiring a local welding instructor/friend to do all my structural welding. Next week should be very exciting after a few months of inactivity in my garage!

On my 51 SD I removed the panel under the rear window and was able to access the bolts holding on the guard.

Those bolts take on a lot of water over the years. You might get lucky with PB Blaster, or they may brake off easy. On my first '50 they were all fused and a quick turn of the wrist with the ratchet easily broke them off without damaging the stainless. I don't recall any of those being attached to the stainless, but if they are, you can braze new bolts back on. I think they're just bolts attached to clips though.

Things are hectic, but I'm squeezing in car time when I can. I've been making my son's '96 Bronco road worthy, so it's been busy. I have media blasted all my control arm spindles and nuts now. I have cut out the raised lip on one lower control arm to weld in 1/4 flat stock for air ride. I am still media blasting control arms. The cabinet is a bit small for these. I have leads in a really nice T5 from a friend I trust, but it is rigged for electric speedo...not what I wanted initially. Geared types from 83-87 are rare in my area. We're almost ready to weld front bag cups and my Gambino front shock relocator kit has now arrived. Hopefully we will be ready for assembly in June so we can get over on to rear notches and 4 link.
