Here's a few pics. First is soldering the new 12v field coils to the post. I used a few alligator clamps as heat sinks. Next is pic in the car!

Another good day. The best part is having my folks in town and hanging out with my dad all day while we tinker. Last night I cleaned, repainted, and put new electronics in the distributor. Today we cleaned the rocker arms and got them back in the car. We're having fun. Here are some pics:

More progress. Installed rocker arm oil line through water jacket, distributor, draft tube, water pump, water outlet, battery cables, vintage plug wires, and listened to Indy 500. What an exciting finish; on fumes! And, I rigged up some shade too! Anyway, here are pics:

Today's work: reinstalled manifold and carb. Hose section of fuel line is temporary until I can find and make a new stainless steel line from pump to carb. I've I decided that I am no longer going to run a fuel filter above the manifold. I'll either put one in back near the tank or just before the fuel pump. For now I just want to get it running for a minute or so later in the week to get oil cycled through and splashed up on the cylinder walls. I will prime the oil system with a drill and flat blade screwdriver bit from the distributor hole first!

Thank you Sir! I'm inching along, a little each day or so. Today I degreased and repainted the side motor mount brackets, added new steel and rubber stabilizers, (which I was shocked to find at O'Reilly's!) Reinstalled all that, and bolted down the transmission, which had just been sitting loosely on the 2nd cross member. I also repaired the damaged oil pan plug that drips and that was about it for the night. Tomorrow we reattach exhaust pipe, add oil, prime engine, and maybe start her up! Pics:

We got her started again. She still runs really smoothly, despite my technical shortcomings! I hope to get the rebuilt transmission off of Mr Lucky this weekend. I have two new freeze plugs that are weeping water, so those may need to come out and get replaced again. I'm still not very good at installing those. I'll have a video link shortly...

Here is the link, I hope: 1st timer 1st restart after cleanup

Thanks guys! I'm really kicking myself over those freeze plugs. I wish I would have used rtv around them. I've had people tell me to do that, and I've had people tell me to just make sure the block surface and plug edge are smooth, clean, and blemish free, and drive them in DRY. I should have asked here first. It's not the end of the world. I have more and I know how to remove them without driving them into the block. Just a pain. On the bright side, I did get a visit today from Mr. Lucky and he sold me a rebuilt rear end and 3 speed transmission. I'll post a pic of those from my phone if it doesn't die on me:

Thanks guys! It's been a busy weekend. First we pulled the motor to start my to do list for the week:
1. Replace weeping freeze plugs I didn't install correctly.
2. Install new transmission.
3. Rebuild shifter box...done.
4. Weld in firewall brace transplants. They are just tacked in for now, but they will be finished and ground and cleaned up later this week. My old buddy who did the welding is currently battling cancer and I admire his tenacity. He says he is still putting in 6 hour days in his shop each day! Here are pics:

Kind of a slow day. It rained on and off and I had marching band tonight; so no real time to get my hands too dirty. I did finally dismantled the filthy rusty transmission mount. I refuse to pay $95 for a new one. There are no 3690316's on ebay right now. There is a 3690416 for Powerglide, and I read another post here that said the rubber piece sandwiched in the middle was the same, just different metal. BUT, at $35, I couldn't justify tearing apart a good one just for the rubber. I decided the rubber on mine is good enough for now and cleaned up and repainted the one I have. I also did something I've scoured the internet for to no avail. I drew a chart of the lever positions on a 3 speed tranny. Feel free to share. It will be quite helpful during the reinstall. Lastly, I repainted the transmission and reinstalled the mount. Is it a good thing that I am starting to know part numbers off the top of my head? I do a lot of research in that Master Parts Catalog. Some sellers on ebay only use vague descriptions with the numbers, so that is quite helpful. Here are pics for today:

Another slow day. Lots of rain. I found bolts at Rural King and made some rubber body cushions for the firewall braces. This old hole punch my dad gave me really came in handy. Firewall rubbers are made from a nice heavy 1/4 inch mud flap...enough to make most if not all of the of the body rubbers and only $12.99! Pic:

AWESOME DAY SO FAR!!!!!! The day I have dreaded all week is only half way over, and so far I am WINNING THE BATTLE!!!!! YES!!!!! Two of these projects had to be skipped earlier do to back ordered parts and what not. I think you'll see why I was dreading this.

My list for today:

1. Rebuild idler arm with kit--CHECK!!
2. Rebuild draglink with kit--CHECK!!
3. Heat flywheel gear ring with torch and flip around to fresh teeth--DOUBLE CHECK!!

And, it's only 12:40pm!! I have 9 more hours of daylight. On the flywheel, I couldn't have done it without my lovely wife. We walked in slow circles around it, me heating it with a propane torch and her following me with the light tapping of a punch and hammer. After that, I let it cool, dressed up the bad leading edge with file so it would sit flush on the install (it had developed a lip sticking out--that's how bad it was!), cleaned with parts cleaner, degreased and neutralized with very hot water and dish soap in the sink, heated the oven to 450 degrees, and set the ring on aluminum foil for about 20 minutes. When it started to stink a bit, I took it out with channel locks (and heavy gloves for safety) set it on the flywheel, gave it a few LIGHT taps, and IT PRACTICALLY FELL INTO PLACE without any real force. It turned out great and I'm so happy it's done. I was scared to death of this job and was about to pay a blacksmith I know to do it for me. Thank you for teaching me so much. I learned how to do this from you guys in old threads on here! Now for a celebratory lunch and back to work!!!!! Cheers!!! Pics later!

Here are some pics. I also ground down some welds today. That is tedious work! I used an air drill with a metal eater bit. It seemed to go faster.

Cleaning up the new leading edge to the flywheel. The teeth were so chewed in spots that they had a raised lip that would prevent the gear from teseating level.

All done! And the wife helped and didn't get mad about using her oven!

My old welder buddy thougt it better to overlap rather than butt weld here, so this will get skimmed with body filler. I know it's not car show winning, but I'm ok with it. I have bigger fish to fry!
