Well, it leaks somewhere...it was flat when I got home that night. We'll figure it out.

Busy day. I set the stock ride height on jack stands, leveled the frame to my floor with shims, attempted to locate the centerline of the rear axle (this will be the 1st of many attempts), set the axle in place, and set an old driveshaft in place for reference. This phase will be more about measuring, and MUCH less about cutting and grinding...

It takes what it takes to get it right, don't get impatient. Did you find the leak?

I think it's the cheap valve and gauge. They were $3 each, so I got what I paid for. Thanks for the encouragement!

Still trying to locate the centerline of the rear axle. I did better today, but it was frustrating to say the least with this heat wave. Mine happens to line up perfectly with the center of a rivet.
But on the other side the river is 1/8" off. Such is my life. I think I'll measure from the back, square up both sides within 1/16" and call it a centerline. The manual says 3/16" deflection from side to side is within tolerance for a "square" frame.
Cheers...

Not a whole lot to report. I've reorganized and cleaned my garage for the next phase. While I wait for the rear notch kit to arrive from Gambinos, I started tearing down and cleaning the outside of my new donor 235. It runs smoother than my old daily driver and doesn't have smoke or blowby. I suspect it may have been rebuilt before it was parked; the freeze plugs are still shiny under the crud! I look forward to opening the oil pan tomorrow and finding out! If plastigauge tolerances are good, I may just paint it and drive it as is. It ran that quietly and smoothly when I bought it!

I went ahead and decoded the casting numbers on the head and the block. The head is a common 3836848...used on 235s for several years starting in 1956. The block is a common 3837004. It was the 56,148th block cast at Tonawanda in 1956. That's a lot of blocks!
Interesting!

My Gambino rear notch kit arrived this week and they are BEAUTIFULLY fabricated!!! I highly recommend this product! They are now tacked together and I used the frame with clamps as a jig. As of today, they are now aligned with the center line of the axle, and ready to weld up completely. Hopefully, my welder friend will be out next week! I hope to order the Gambino 4 link and bag kit in the next week. Here are some pics:

Not much to report these last few weeks, now that school is back in session. I did manage to sell my spare 235, the roof, rear windshield, and transmission from "2ndtimer". I know what you're thinking...what is 2ndtimer? Hard to believe it's been a year since we parted her out. The 235 will go into a 1946 5 Window truck that you may see at Frog Follies in a few weeks. The roof will donate it's rear window opening to a 1953 sedan chop in Tennessee. Glad to find good homes for this stuff!

Mocking up the 4 link temporarily just to have a look...the bags and plates will sit much higher when the notch is complete. Waiting on my professional welder friend to come over...

Thank you Sir! My welder friend has been really busy the last month. As soon as he has some free time, I think progress will be pretty quick.

When your friend welds, does he use your welder and do you watch his technique?

A great way to learn technique is to watch his gun movement at the tip. Pick his brain on heat and feed speed. I bought a new tig machine this summer and it's going to be a while before it have any welds for public viewing. I dug out my weld school books and I need to spend a lot of time at the table practicing.

Sounds good! Hopefully I will see him tomorrow evening to have the notches welded in! Speaking of TIG welding, one of my band students, a 3rd year welding student, along with his welding teacher at our school welded up my notch pieces yesterday. The kid tigged the outside seams and the teacher migged the insides. They are beatiful!

Today was tedious. I removed old spring perches that will no longer be used with the 4 link. Those old hot rivets are beasts to remove. Next I cleaned up a few welds and ground off a few spatters here and there. I also started cutting the old spring mounts off the 3:55 axle housing. Slow dirty work all day...

This is my pesky rivet remover! Cut the heads off, drill halfway thru with a 5/16", and blow'em out. Watch out for shrapnel! All your work is paying off.

Here's everything I cut off the frame this past week...two inner chunks of frame for the notches, four leaf spring perches, and one axle perch.
